Week 4 | The Book of Genesis, Chapters 13-15

·

Genesis 13: Abram, very rich, travel with Sarai and Lot, travels back to his tent in Cannan. He returns to the alter that he built to possibly repent for his lie. Abram and Lot travel with so many things and people and tells Lot they should peacefully separate to the right and left, so that each party has room for their possessions and people. Abram, being a selfless peacemaker, tells Lot to choose which land he wants- the dry baron land or the green garden land- and of course Lot chooses the lush land our of greed. Abram moved his tens to Sodom, a very corrupt and violent city, and builds an alter to have a place of worship, and is told that all the land is Abram’s, even the land that Lot sees as his possession.

Genesis 14: In this chapter, war breaks out and Lot, his entire family and their possessions are taken captive. Abram leaves with 318 men and defeats them, bringing back Lot, the people who were taken, and all their possessions. The King of Salem comes to meet Abram to bless him, bringing wine and bread. There is thought that King Melchizedek is actually Jesus in a different form, however some say he was just a king and priest. Abram gives the priest 10% of what his possessions are, which is the first acknowledgement of tithing, meaning Abram truly believes King Melchizedek is holy. The king offers Abram money for some of his people, but Abram wanted nothing to do with it.

Genesis 15: God send Abram a vision telling him not to fear, that he will watch over him, and tells him that his reward for his faithfulness would be great. Abram asks God if he would give him a son as his reward, because he has nobody to pass his legacy to that is his own blood. Back then, when people didn’t have children to pass their things onto, they would choose someone to adopt, so to speak. Even though Abram had someone named to take over his reign, Eliezer. This may be a servant of Abrams who he was very fond of that he chose to be his heir, however it’s unclear. God promises Abram that he will have his own biological children, promising Abram that his heirs will be more than the number of the stars, meaning descendants and his family tree as a whole. Abram is very skeptical of Gods promise, so God reminds Abram all that he has done and what he is capable of. To give Abram peace of mind that this would be true, he tells Abram to lay out specific animal sacrifices as a covenant between the two. God prophesizes to Abram that there is a land that will not be his to rein over for 400 more years before he is able to rein over this place. Thereafter this land will belong to all of his children, listing all of the different regions of people that would be his descendants over the next 400 years.
